| Slate
Slate is one of the oldest roofing materials known to man. Even though slate was not popular in the United States until the late 19th century, Archeological excavations have uncovered strata slate roofs before the Revolution, dating back to 1625. Installed properly, slate roofs require relatively little maintenance and can last 6o-125 years.
Slate roofing tiles are manufactured by hand using traditional methods in a five step process: Cutting, sculpting, splitting, trimming and hole punching. Slate consists of minerals that are stable and resistant to weathering, therefore, generally of high strength, low porosity and low absorption.
The application of a Slate roof is very technical and requires special tools. This is Newport Roofings specialty. We have over 20 years experience in laying slate roofs for fine homes in Southern California. The color mixes are endless and application designs are many.
